Why Early Synthetic Rubies Exist in Antique Jewelry?
In the late 19th century, French chemist Auguste Verneuil pioneered the flame-fusion method to successfully grow commercial-quality rubies in a lab. When these synthetic rubies first emerged in the late Victorian era (circa 1880s–1900), they were a marvel of modern science and highly fashionable. Because they were initially scarce and expensive to engineer, Victorian jewelers proudly set them into high-end, hand-crafted jewelry alongside real diamonds and various types of gold content.
